A car gasoline (petrol... for the UK) tank doesn't contain the oxygen required to ignite it all at once.
How much oxygen is required?
A hot air balloon's worth of oxygen?
It's obviously safer than a car battery from this perspective.
An EV battery (and a stick of dynamite for what is worth, or the gunpowder, or solid rocket fuel...) have all the ingredients required to fully combust all at once, no need for atmospheric oxygen to be added.
